i want to be a doer // april 2014 update

Back at the end of February, I wrote this post about wanting to be a doer and want to focus on doing things that make me happy. Fast forward a little over a month later (seriously - where is the time going?!) and I am making progress.

Most of my "to do list goals" are long term (and would need a positive change in our financial situation which isn't on the horizon yet) but as mentioned before, I just wanted to dump all the things I have on my mind into one list and see what we can accomplish as a family.

I have a handful of items to add and I think this list is going to be organic - changing constantly and as long as I have it all written down in one place, this works really well for me - visually seeing what we have done and what we still want to do.

Completed Dreams:
  • Pay off our American Express (and stop using credit cards completely). Ever since I started my maternity leave, we pay off any charges we make on our credit card right away (we get Air Miles while using our American Express so it pays to use it). We have found a way to pay off our American Express interest free. So even though we still owe a large sum, we have a plan in place and are paying down the principal 100% vs. only paying off the interest each month. I feel great about this and it is a weight off my shoulders. We aren't out of the woods yet but we will be ... in about 2 years - ha ha. I am crossing this one off because it is definitely being taken care of. Phew!
  • Take Charlotte swimming. This happened and it was fabulous!

Dreams Added Today:

  • Take Charlotte to the zoo.
  • Take Charlotte to the aquarium.
  • Wine tasting at Krause Berry Farms.
  • Get all our random photos, pictures and art framed and hung.
  • Create and continue keeping a Project Life album.
  • Build a table top work station for my craft room.
  • Have a garage sale this spring.
  • Get a photo of Charlotte blown up for our bedroom.

On-Going Dreams:

  • Be a stay at home mom.
  • Plan Charlotte's fabulous 1st birthday party.
  • Go to Vegas again with my husband and friends.
  • Take Charlotte to Disneyland with the grandparents.
  • Go on a cruise with my husband.
  • Buy a more family friendly vehicle. Yes - a mini-van is probably in my near future! :)
  • Re-do our kitchen (gut job).
  • Buy a new TV and storage unit.
  • Have brunch at Lou's Bar and Grill (we love it at Lou's but have never had brunch there).
  • Take a day trip to Lynden, Washington (my parents used to take me there all the time and I need to go back for a visit - I always drive past it on the way to Bellingham - time to stop by).
I'll keep updating as I add things and check things off this list. The checking things off part is my very favourite!

I found this post inspiring and love all the beautiful and inspiring things on this blog.

What are your dreams this month?

i want to be a doer

I've been thinking a lot about what I want out of my life lately. I am officially an "adult" - I have a career, I am married, I own a home, I have a chunk of debt (don't all adults?!) and I now have a child. The question, "What's next?" keeps popping into my head.

I have learned a lot about myself during the 4.5 months since my daughter was born. I can no longer multi-task like I used to (this may just be due to the fact that I would rather spend time with her over doing other mundane things), I have zero desire to go back to work (financially I have to but if we could afford it, I would LOVE to be a stay at home mom), I love to write (I knew this before but being on maternity leave has allowed me the time to be reminded of this), I have to say NO more now than ever (I just learned a big lesson in this area and it was quite the humbling experience) and, most importantly, I am a family woman through and through - my family is all that really matters now.

These are all great things to learn about oneself but they also put things into perspective. They are really making me focus on what I WANT to do vs. what I HAVE to do vs. what I DON'T WANT OR HAVE to do.

Unless something has to do with something I love, something for me or something to do with my husband or daughter, count me out.

I've decided to start a list of all the things I want to do in my life - big and small (some are tiny even). Instead of making multiple lists, colour coding them, attaching a dollar figure to them, dating them, creating spreadsheets, etc. like I normally would, I am just going to dump everything I always say I want to do in one list - in zero particular order - so I can start crossing these suckers off. I have no idea when I will do these things, how I will do some of them or how I will afford some of them but it's time to be the adult that I am and become a doer and not a talker. This is just a quick start - I will add to this list as I come up with new dreams and ideas.

Jaclyn's To Do/Bucket/Wish List:
  • Be a stay at home mom.
  • Plan Charlotte's fabulous 1st birthday party.
  • Go to Vegas again with my husband and friends.
  • Take Charlotte to Disneyland with the grandparents.
  • Go on a cruise with my husband.
  • Buy a more family friendly vehicle. Yes - a mini-van is probably in my near future! :)
  • Re-do our kitchen (gut job).
  • Pay off our American Express (and stop using credit cards completely).
  • Take Charlotte swimming.
I hope to report back here when I am able to check something off this list. Stay tuned!

What's on your list? Let's start getting s&*% done!

goals for 2014

As you may have realized, I am a huge fan of setting goal - both long and short term. I always have a master to do list on the go, and to me, a to do list is a form of goal setting in itself.

I am also a fan of the good old pen and paper. I love my electronic tools - my computer, my iPhone and my ipad - but I find it very therapeutic to physically write out my goals on paper. I keep a list of goals and tasks in my May Designs agenda, and I review them often, daily actually.

Since it's the beginning of a new year, there are a ton of blog posts and printables flying around to help you keep on track this year. I found this post and printable from Living Locurto to be very practical, and their process is quite similar to mine so I thought I would share.

No matter whether your 2014 goals are health, financial, personal, business, creative or all of the above, I wish you all the best with staying focused. Now go write them down! Good luck!

new year's goals

Hey, I'm a new mom so I'm focussing on some goals for 2014 vs. resolutions (a.k.a. promises). 2013 was the best year of my life so far because I got to meet our baby girl, Charlotte, and I started the most important role I will ever take on - being a good mother.

Since I am on maternity leave, the plan is to go back to work in October 2014. It will all depend on finances basically but if money wasn't an issue, I would definitely be a stay at home mom. That's actually my new dream.

Unfortunately that dream is not in the cards right now so I am going to use 2014 as a refocusing year - to work on becoming the woman (and mother) I really want to be.

Start Moving
I was super excited when I started breastfeeding and lost a ton of weight after Charlotte was born. It felt like it just melted away and even though I wasn't back to pre-pregnancy shape, I was feeling pretty good. Then I went to put my jeans on (that fit me pretty good about a month after giving birth) at about 8 weeks post delivery, they didn't fit. Not even a little bit. Normally this would depress me big time but with all my focus on Charlotte these days, I didn't let it bother me too much. I guess since Charlotte is eating less - and more efficiently - I'm not burning as many calories. I'm proud of my body for what it went through to bring Charlotte into the world, but I must admit, I'm not a fan of looking at myself naked. Because of that, I will move more in 2014. I'm not big on working out so even if it just means going for more walks around the neighborhood or playing spring league soccer, my body is going to start going in a healthy direction instead of backwards.

Get Creative
When I was pregnant I was really worried that I wasn't going to have time to get anything done. Turns out I was really wrong. There's plenty of time in the day, it just comes down to me to use it effectively. Since Charlotte was born (October 11th) I have worked on my scrapbook, put together her baby book, created and assembled our Christmas cards, written more blog posts than ever before - a lot of little, creative projects that I have loved working on. In 2014 I will continue writing on my blog and will keep working on creative projects (hoping to get back into the jewelry making game - more on that later) that aren't too overwhelming, and feed my soul.

Declutter
If I don't love it or need it, it is out of here. Period. Feels so good to purge and donate so I will do much more of it in 2014. We have so much, too much, and way more than we need. I guess if my husband loves something, it has to stay, but if it's not useful to one of us - bye bye.

Stay Connected
For the first few months of Charlotte's life, I had major anxiety when I had plans on the calendar. I would worry about something I had to do that was more than a week away. Part of it was due to the fact that my husband and I switched vehicles so I was suddenly driving a big truck (compared to a Honda civic hatchback) - that I couldn't park for the life of me. The other part was because I had a fear of Charlotte getting too fussy in public. What if she cries and I can't console her? What if I need to breastfeed her in public? Of course I always built it up bigger in my head. And of course it always worked out just fine. I would even get anxious if people came to visit me at my house. But I always enjoyed it. I loved the company, the connecting, the chats. So in 2014 I am going to make more plans. Connect with more friends and family. Less fear and more human contact. Bring it on.

I am really looking forward to seeing what the New Year has to offer. Now, if only I could find a way to slow down time, everything would be perfect! :)

What are your goals for the New Year?

my word for 2014 // calm

I love Ali Edwards and find her incredibly inspiring so this year, I decided to jump on her One Word bandwagon.

In 2014, my chosen word to focus on is CALM.

I will choose to remain calm when anxiety overtakes my mind and body.

I will think calm thoughts when Charlotte gets fussy.

I will take deep, calming breaths when my husband and I aren't fully connecting.

I will remain calm and focussed when life becomes overwhelming or my plate gets too full.

I will make 2014 a calm year, and will make sure that my soul is calm and that it takes over my anxiety.

What is your 'one word' that you will focus on in the New Year?

P.S. I love the Calm line from Escents Aromatherapy. It really does have a calming effect when I smell the essential oil combination. Maybe that will be my 2014 scent! :)

i am a collector

I realized something lately. As a little girl, I was big on collecting things. Now, looking back, I think it had much more to do with my self diagnosed OCD more than anything - the need and love of keeping things organized and in their place. I collected stickers, rubber stamps, rubber balls, Cabbage Patch Kids (I had 11 of them - go divorced parents go), Barbies (still have two whole bins full of these little lovelies in their packages - yep, I was that kid who didn't actually play with them) ... the list goes on!

As I grew older, my obsession over collecting died down. I never started an "adult" collection of figurines or artwork or postage stamps or anything like that but recently, after being on mat leave and having some time to organize my office space, I realize that I am still a collector at heart.

I collect:
  • Recipes ... that I will never cook.
  • Scrapbook Supplies ... that I will never put into a scrapbook.
  • Jewelry Supplies ... that will never be made into anything.
  • Knitting Needles and Yarn ... and I don't even know how to knit.
  • Picture Frames ... that are mostly cheap and from the dollar store that will never hold pictures.
I take after my mother in this area 100%. Do you collect "things" for various hobbies that you know in your heart you will never use?

So I have gotten rid of a lot of crap and started to think more about what I really enjoy doing. Instead of collecting recipes that I will "one day" write on to recipes cards, I have asked for a recipe binder for Christmas so I skip the in between step and make it easy for me to store them. And only the ones that I think would be truly delicious. I have given up my dream of learning to knit. Family members are getting framed photos of the baby girl with their Christmas gifts this year. I am on the lookout for the perfect photo album for Charlotte's photos that I will embellish with my scrapbooking odds and ends and stickers - it's my own version of Project Life people! :)

As for the jewelry supplies, I actually have a shop on Etsy. It might just be make a reappearance in the New Year. I love doing it so why not give it a go?

Cleaning and clearing out my home, heart and soul for the New Year ... and it feels great!

hello september!

Wow. September. Where did you come from? I did not see you coming but I am so happy you are here. Fall is mine and my husband's most favourite time of the year. We got married on September 25th so that we could have the fall colours as part of our decor. Everyone asks me if I have had a horribly hot pregnant summer and my reply is always, "Not really. I hate the humid weather but I would much rather be pregnant in the summer than give birth in the summer." Baby Girl is due at the end of October - the time of year where I feel the most focused, balanced and alive. Life is good during the fall. And this year will be extra special. There is so much to be grateful for and so much to look forward to.

This September I plan to:

  • Enjoy my baby shower with all my favourite girlfriends.
  • Celebrate with my step-dad for his 66th birthday.
  • Finish organizing the nursery.
  • Complete our budget plan for when I go on maternity leave.
  • Learn how to use our new camera. We went with this one. Any tips on the best way to use this camera would be greatly appreciated.
  • Start my recipe/meal planning project for when I am off work.
  • Put together the last details in my work binder that I will leave behind for the ladies in the office.
Lots to do and not enough time but I plan to start working smarter and not harder - when I focus on what is really important, I am always amazed at what I can accomplish. Life is good people!

PS: Read this article recently and it really helped me put things in perspective. With the fall calendar already filling up quickly, take the time to read this and get focused: Filling the Time Jar {5 Steps that will Change Your Life}.

five ways to follow through on your goals

If you are anything like me, to do lists and goal lists tend to help me run my life. I live for them and feel a great deal of satisfaction if I cross something off my list or accomplish a goal. I am always collecting tips and ideas on how to better manage my time and basically, get S*&% done! Found the following list of Five Ways to Follow Through on Your Goals and thought I would share it - a great reminder and a pretty list to hang on your mirror or put anywhere you collect your inspiration that helps you stay on track. Enjoy friends!

a little more and a little less

Happy 2013 Friends! We had a fantastic New Year's Eve celebrating with good friends and delicious fondue. It was low-key and perfect. Today was my first day back in the office and it went really well - my boss even let us go a bit early to ease us back into the working schedule - ha ha. It helped :)

I've been thinking a lot about this year and what I want to accomplish. There is a lot of talk around the blog world about "One Word" - choosing one word that you focus on throughout the year. I have chosen two words: positive and gratitude. Whenever I am feeling down and out or stressed, I will focus on being positive and remember all that I am grateful for. I started doing this in 2012 and when I did, it made a huge difference for me. It's amazing that I have to make an effort to think positively in some situations and to remember to be grateful but life gets out of control from time to time - this helps me get back on track.

I have a list of personal goals for this year but these are my general resolutions - a little more and a little less:
  1. Save more.
  2. Blog more.
  3. Create more.
  4. Do more.
  5. Read more.
  6. Cook more.
  7. Attend more.
  8. Focus more.
  9. Write more.
  10. Decorate more.
  11. Judge less.
  12. Gossip less.
  13. Spend less.
What is your focus for 2013?

PS - We broke down Boxing Day Week and bought a new computer so this will really help me with blogging in 2013. Having a computer at home that works well makes all the difference and makes me happy!

november goals

Happy Halloween friends! Tomorrow I get to officially start planning for Christmas! Yes - I am that person. This is my most favourite time of the year! Time to get focused on my plans and projects. What do you do to keep yourself sane during this overwhelming season?

My goals are a bit different this month - more personal vs. project based. I have been doing a lot of self-discovery lately through my reading, who I spend my time with and the activities I put into my calendar. Heading into a wonderful holiday season with only peace, joy and love on my brain! What are your November goals?

November Goals:
  1. Judge less. I wish I could eliminate this all together but I am realistic. If I catch myself doing this at least that is a start.
  2. Stop apologizing for things that I am not the least bit sorry for (nor should I be).
  3. Be less passive aggressive. Deal with things in the moment and don't put them off.
  4. Read more.
  5. Focus on ME. Put ME first because now one else is going to! :)

september goals

We are at the very beginning of my most favourite time of the year - September 1st to December 31st. I tolerate the rest of the year (I am exaggerating a lot when I say this because life is really good the whole year through) but this third of the year makes me so HAPPY! I love everything fall has to offer - the colours, the clothes, the food, the smells, the weather, the start of soccer season, the family get-togethers ... Yes! I love it ALL :) Going to have to set some great goals to go along with this amazing time of the year! It truly is (for me) "The most wonderful time of the year!". july goals

I know it sounds so repetitive because everyone is either talking about how fast time flies or the weather, but holy crap - how is it July already? And where is the sunshine? (Yes - I am now officially old.)

My May and June goals kind of blended in together (some are just going to be on-going as they are not something I can just check off and mark as done). Let's see what July has to offer!

As you can see I have a lot of goals still left to accomplish but I feel good that they are written down and I am working towards them.
  1. Start working on Legare's MOH speech.
  2. Create summer photo albums as gifts for two very special people in my life.
  3. Brainstorm for an on-going creative project.
  4. Figure out my work social media plan (schedule, tools, reports, etc).
  5. Book some time off to work around the house.
Goal Updates:

Eat more slowly, say grace and think before eating.
July: On-going.

Brainstorm more ways to use my organizational skills for a possible career choice.
May: My mind has been working at this every day and night. Still in the thinking stage but getting closer ... I can feel it!
June: Unfortunately I haven't made much progress on this one so it has to stay on the list!
July: This is in my mind constantly. Still brainstorming away and really have to see how I can make this happen in one creative form or another.

Work on a craft project per week.

May: Been doing more thinking than doing on this goal but I can feel it coming together. Hello Crafty May!
June: Dreaming but not doing. Must DO in June!
July: OBSESSED but have not done this so far. Must. Make. This. Happen.

Get back to making jewelry.
July: OBSESSED but have not done this so far. Must. Make. This. Happen.

Get my recipe project in order and start cooking them!
July: OBSESSED but have not done this so far. Must. Make. This. Happen.

Read a little every day.
DONE!

june goals

Time to reflect back on my May Goals and to look forward to June!

1. Eat more slowly, say grace and think before eating.
May: Working on this. This has always been a struggle for me but when I do take my time to eat and enjoy what is going into my body, the process is much more rewarding. This will always be on my "goal/to do" list I think.
June: Still working on this but have gotten really great at writing down what I am grateful for every day using the Wonderful Days journal app as well as using the MyFitnessPal app. Can't cross this one off the list yet but there is definitely progress happening!

2. Brainstorm more ways to use my organizational skills for a possible career choice.
May: My mind has been working at this every day and night. Still in the thinking stage but getting closer ... I can feel it!
June: Unfortunately I haven't made much progress on this one so it has to stay on the list!

4. Add an extra day of moving/exercise per week.

May: Just found the time to do this and it feels amazing. Bought some new kicks this weekend so bring on the movement!
June: DONE! And will continue my walk/run plan throughout the summer!

may goals

Holy Hanna Montana! I cannot believe that tomorrow is ALREADY MAY 1st!!! I know everyone says it and it is obnoxious every time it is said but seriously - where has the time gone? I am just starting to get into my April goals and it is the last day of April. Oh well - better late than never :) With that in mind, I am going to carry over my April goals to May. Here is a quick update ...

1. Eat more slowly, say grace and think before eating.
Working on this. This has always been a struggle for me but when I do take my time to eat and enjoy what is going into my body, the process is much more rewarding. This will always be on my "goal/to do" list I think.

2. Have 5 successful work events. A big month for me!
I am able to cross this one off for May. Yay! April was awesome work wise - it flew by but it was a successful fly by Goose! Bring on May and then June is our golf tournament. I just need some solid sunshine to make that event a success!

3. Brainstorm more ways to use my organizational skills for a possible career choice.
My mind has been working at this every day and night. Still in the thinking stage but getting closer ... I can feel it!

4. Add an extra day of moving/exercise per week.
Just found the time to do this and it feels amazing. Bought some new kicks this weekend so bring on the movement!

to do list/goals

I have had a ton of "things" floating through my head lately and I have just felt kind of scattered for the past few weeks. In order to get back on track, I have to get back to my "To Do Lists" and my goals. In no particular order and with no timeline attached as of yet ...
  1. Try Bikram Yoga at the yoga studio in Langley.
  2. Remember to send out birthday and holiday cards to the people I care about well in advanced of the specific date required.
  3. Take the May extra long weekend to rejuvenate my soul and get back on track.
  4. Finish my recipe card box project.
  5. Finish my wedding photo projects.
  6. Start a physical paper journal or blog more often.
  7. Figure out how I can contribute to the house renovations and gardening process without a) pissing off my husband or b) feeling stupid.
  8. TO BE CONTINUED ...

more resolutions

So I have been giving this a lot more thought than I thought I would and have a few more items to add to my list for 2011 ...

BE IN THE MOMENT --- Always easier said than done but my mind is always going a 100 miles a minute thinking about what I have to do. It is time to slow down and think about what I AM doing NOW. This quote sums it up quite nicely: "You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment." ~ Henry David Thoreau

ONLY EAT WHEN I AM HUNGRY --- My goal this year is to think before I put anything in my mouth. Do I need this? Am I actually hungry or just bored? Can I wait to eat until my next planned meal? It needs to be more of a thoughtful process rather than just "something I do". This will not only help with my mind/body/spirit connection but - as the experts say - this will help drop the pounds without even batting an eye. Fingers crossed :)

DRINK MORE WATER --- I have slacked on this BAD lately and want to get back into the routine of cleaning out my body. My body NEEDS water and it is a very easy thing for me to provide so why don't I? Time to get back on that band wagon!

- Blog more often.
- Get back to making jewelry.
