1st time mom review series guest blogger // favourite baby products

Please welcome back 1st Time Mom Review Series guest blogger, Tara Regehr. Tara is a first-time mom of beautiful 8 week old Isla. Tara and Isla live in Port Coquitlam with husband/daddy Aaron and 2 cats. Click here to read Tara's first post about her struggles with breastfeeding. To connect with Tara, please check out her blog here. Thanks for sharing Tara!

My daughter is almost 11 weeks old. I can't believe how fast time is flying by! When I was pregnant 3 months seemed to take forever. Now that my favorite person in the world is here, 3 months seems like 3 weeks!

I read reviews on baby products just like a lot of moms and thought I had it all figured out. I was lucky enough to have very generous parents and family who asked me to pick out what I wanted and they would purchase it for me. I was also lucky enough to be handed down some great items from other moms. Some worked, some didn't. That's not to say that some of my "nos" might turn into favorite items later on.

Here's my list of things that I've loved so far:

I tried various bottles and some of them gave my little girl very bad gas, something I tried desperately to avoid. After turning to Facebook, the consensus was Dr. Browns Natural Flow bottles. I ran out and grabbed one and it totally cleared up her gas issues. I'm now hooked! There are a few parts to clean but it is worth it.

Speaking of bottles, I recently bought this bottle brush after trying all sorts of ways to clean the bottles. This brush, some hot water, and a little soap works even better than the dishwasher. It gets in all the nooks and crannies and the bottom screws off as a brush for the nipples. Wonderful!

I bought this used from a swap site after humming and hawing about getting one. It was cheap so I gave it a shot. It is quick and efficient. It is good during the day at home. You measure water out depending on the size and it heats it to the proper temperature.

We were given this swing by a friend. My only complaint is that we didn't set it up soon enough. I'm sure there are other swings on the market that may have more bells and whistles but this item has been a lifesaver for us. Isla naps in it, hangs out it in, and calms down in it. It has a mobile, a mirror, and 4 music settings. It also rotates either side to side or back and forth. This is truly a miracle! She loves looking up and seeing a reflection, and as a great side note, it is fairly easy to clean.

My best girlfriend arrived at my house our first day home with this gift for Isla. She wished she had it for her little one, and wanted to get me one. We loved it right away, but we didn't realize how useful it would be. When she was really little, before the swing was set up, she spent most of her time in this bed. She still sleeps in it inside her pack and play in our room. Since she's had it from birth, it is a comfort to her. Sadly, at almost 3 months, she has almost outgrown it but it is a great product for freshies! It zips up and you can put a blanket inside and transport it to family members houses for a quick bed solution.

Unfortunately our daughter didn't take to the bassinet feature of this pack n play, but she still sleeps in the crib part. It is a little heavy but it is collapsible and transportable. We will be taking it with us when we travel and when she's older we will use it to keep her safe. It has a change table and little cubbies to keep changing products. We know it will be useful again if we have a second baby too. We didn't know what we were having so it's gender neutral.

My mom apparently stocked up on diapers for us when we were pregnant because we have about 10 cases in our garage. My cousins wife swore by Pampers so that's primarily what my mom bought. I've tried other brands and other types of Pampers, but by far the Swaddlers seem to keep Isla dry the best.

My husband is the bath guy in our house. It is their time together and he loves how much she enjoys taking a bath. We were gifted with a lot of Aveeno and Johnson and Johnson bath products. Aaron's best friend and his wife sent us a package during our first week home that included these bath products. Isla was having slight rashes so I was trying out different products and we decided to try these bath items to see if it made a difference. Oh my gosh - they smell delicious and lingers a while, they leave her skin very soft, and a bonus - they are all natural. They are expensive but it's a nice treat for her and us!

Yes, this is for me, not my baby, but in the moments where I'm alone waiting for her to doze off in the dark and quiet, having something quick to entertain me is a bit of a relief.

I will save my other favourites for another time but I hope you find these useful.

1st time mom review series guest // becoming a mom to baby #2

Please welcome the 1st Time Mom Review Series first interview guest, Christie Winfield. Christie and I have known each other since grade 3 (insane!!!) and have kept in touch over the years even though we now live in different provinces. Christie is already mom to 18 month old Tristan but baby #2 is on his/her way so I've asked Christie to share her thoughts on becoming a 2nd time mom.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a 34 year old mother of an 18 month boy and wife of a wonderful man going on 10 years living in Calgary. I am a nurse working part time in an acute mental health unit. I am a lover of nature and the outdoors with hobbies that include golf, soccer, snowboarding and camping, although I have found little time to participate in these hobbies other than camping since my son was born.

Describe how it felt to become a first time mom.
Becoming a mother for the first time was truly a dream come true. I was amazed, shocked, scared and truly in love. There is really nothing that can prepare you for the feelings that flood you when you see and hold your child for the fist time and then come to the realization that this tiny person depends on you to nurture and love them. Terrifying and thrilling all at the same time.

When are you due with baby #2?
My second child is due September 20th, 2014 which is actually 2 days before my son's second birthday. Too funny. My only wish is that they are at least a week apart in birthdays so they don't have to share.

Is there anything you are doing differently with this pregnancy than your first?
To be honest, I really have not changed anything I'm doing with this pregnancy from the first time I was pregnant. I am very fortunate to say that I had a very easy pregnancy the first time around and things have for the most part been the same, so far, this time also. The only thing I am doing differently is I am trying to do different is enrolling into prenatal programs such as prenatal yoga classes. I could use the relaxation and exercise but I think it would be nice to meet other pregnant woman, hopefully who also have young children Tristan's age.

Is there anything different you plan on doing with your second labour and delivery than your first?
I had no expectations with my first delivery. I have seen a few deliveries from nursing school and am well educated in the whole prenatal, delivery and postpartum processes so I was a little bit more at ease with what to expect, other than actually experiencing labour. I just wanted to go with the flow the first time and take each hurdle as it was presented. The first delivery was about 10 hours and I eventually opted for an epidural which was the smart move since my son was born with the help of forceps. I will again, go in with no plan and make my decisions as needed. The only difference this time, hopefully, will be the hospital. There is a new hospital that is much closer to me. The bonus of this hospital is that your delivery and postpartum will be entirely in the same room and they are all private rooms. This is soooo appealing to me and many other people in the city which is why they are turning many people away from their maternity clinics due to having too many patients. Of course they can't turn you away if you show up in labour, ha ha.

What are you most excited about in regards to having baby #2?
I am most excited about having a baby to hold and cuddle with. Tristan is past the cuddly phase and wants to be so independent so it will be nice to get tons of cuddles again. I also am looking forward to this new little more so because there is that confidence now that I didn't have the first time around. We know what to do this time and I really don't think it will be as stressful as it was at some points with Tristan. I just wonder, as many mothers may, is if I can love another little one as much as I love the first and will I be able to share my love equally between the two kids.

What is the #1 baby product(s) you must have for baby #2?
I am obsessing about strollers and which one to get. If only I would have bought a double stroller from the beginning, I wouldn't be wasting my money on a second one. Especially since all the really great double strollers that I am interested in (3 wheel for trail walks and jogging) are a HUGE amount of money. Also a better baby monitor. My monitor was a cheaper one and the range really isn't that great, especially when camping and I would like to have one with a camera. I have some friends with a camera monitor and it is so much better. Other than those two things, I'm pretty much good to go.

Anything you would like to add?
I can't think of anything else to add. I hope this is helpful.

Baby #1 Tristan, Daddy Dana and Rockstar Mom Christie.

1st time mom review series guest // overcoming breastfeeding challenges

Please welcome the 1st Time Mom Review Series first guest blogger, Tara Regehr. Tara is a first-time mom of beautiful 8 week old Isla. Tara and Isla live in Port Coquitlam with husband/daddy Aaron and 2 cats. This is Tara's story about her 1st time mom breastfeeding challenges. To connect with Tara, please check out her blog here. Thanks for sharing Tara!

I am a firm believer that every woman will walk their path in life the way they choose is right for them. We all make choices in life that we need to stand behind. As a woman who is a planner, who makes lists, sets goals, and is a bit of a control freak, entering into motherhood was something I knew would throw my world into chaos and I was ready for it. I saw my friends with the dirty dishes in their sinks and stacks of laundry. I saw their frazzled looks, spit up on their shoulders, bags beneath their eyes. I was ready for the midnight wake ups, the dirty home, the chance that I'd be late to events or wouldn't even make it at all. I was prepared. What I wasn't prepared for was the issue of breastfeeding.

A week before my due date, I found out that my baby was breech. After unsuccessfully trying a version to flip the baby, my plan of a completely natural birth went out the window in favor of a planned c-section. I went through a mourning period for what I wouldn't get to experience and I had to accept that something I planned (yes it seems strange to plan for the uncertainty of labour) was now being taken away from me. But when my baby girl (we didn't know what we were having in advance) was born on February 9th, right on her actual due date but 24 hours after we arrived at the hospital for the surgery, I was quite ecstatic that she latched on almost immediately. When I was 19 I had a breast reduction from a size E to a more comfortable C. I knew I may not be able to breastfeed, but the doctors reassured me that because I was so young, I had a great chance. The first day in the hospital, my newborn fed well and often. She was pretty content. The second night in the hospital however, we realized that she wasn't getting full so we supplemented with a little eyedropper of formula. She lost 10% of body weight, but they released us knowing that we had things under control. The lactation nurse assured me that my milk would probably come in sooner than later. When we got home from the hospital, things went downhill quickly. Not only was she not getting enough milk from me but she stopped latching from the left breast and didn't always want to feed on my right breast. I had no choice but to start her on a bottle of formula, something I never wanted to have to do. My best girlfriend rushed out on our first morning home with a breast pump to talk me down from the edge.

I spoke to the public health nurse on the phone as well as the nurses hotline (811) to get advice and as much as I listened to their great advice and calming words, I felt helpless. I felt like I was a failure to my child. I felt shame. Yes, it was the hormones talking, but i have never felt so useless and alone in my life even with a loving husband helping me through it. I was given these breasts for a reason... to nourish my child and I was failing at it. She needed me and i couldn't provide. She was crying for me and I was letting her down. After a trip to the health unit, 2 trips to the doctor, and a visit with a breastfeeding consultant, all within Isla's first 2 weeks, I was advised that I was probably producing enough milk but because of missing nerves from my ducts to the nipple as a result of my surgery 15 years prior, I just couldn't get enough out. The breastfeeding doctor helped me with new ways to encourage my baby to latch through the use of a nipple shield. She advised me that my baby wasn't latching for a variety of reasons including not getting the satisfaction of milk, my own nerves and hesitation were being transferred to her, and my wrecked nipples probably didn't encourage a good latch. I tried harder to relax, used the shield, used a ton of lanolin cream, and gave myself a little talking to for judging myself so harshly. The fog started to lift. At 16 days old, she started to latch more and more. By 6 weeks, I dropped the shield entirely and Isla started feeding straight from my breast.

My new challenge, besides the overwhelming hormones rushing through my body, the sleepless nights, the sore nipples, learning her cues, the fear of being home alone with her all day while recovering from a surgery I hadn't wanted, would be to figure out the tricky balance of breastfeeding and bottle feeding. I wanted to ensure that she still got nutrients from me while getting the volume of food she needed from the formula. I will admit that the first month was a complete emotional roller coaster. This wasn't part of the plan! I wasn't supposed to use bottles. She was supposed to a a breastfed baby. I had all the covers they tell you to buy and the creams and the nursing bras and pads. I was ready to exclusively breastfeed her not to formula feed her. My plan was out the window and I had to adjust. Okay, I could do this. I would be on a new journey, one that involved figuring out the best way to prepare and store formula, when to feed her what, when to pump, the best bottles to use, what wouldn't give her gas, etc. but I could do this. I made a new plan. My baby just turned 8 weeks old and I feel like I've finally figured it out. We have a good system. I feed her only a bottle at her 2am and 5am feedings, but all during the day, she gets a boob when she gets a bottle. I will admit that sometimes she gets on my breast just to calm her down in between feedings, and I am flexible when I need to be. It isn't a perfect system, but it works for us.

Beautiful baby Isla - Happy, healthy and well fed.

Perhaps the hardest part of this experience is getting over the feeling of failure I continue to feel. When I feed my very young daughter a bottle in public, some people still glance over and I wonder if they are judging me for not breastfeeding. I will admit that I used to wonder the same thing, "Why isn't that baby on the boob?". There continues to be a secrecy about the issues of breastfeeding. It wasn't until I made a very conscious decision right away to seek support with my problems that I found out how many people in my life had similar problems. My aunt couldn't do it at all, my mom and my mother-in-law all had to stop after a few months, and some of my close friends couldn't produce enough for their babies. I had no idea. No one told me until my own problems arose. Why are we so open about our lack of sleep and feelings of being overwhelmed by the responsibility of a new human being in our lives, but we don't want to talk about the most natural thing on the planet - feeding our babies? I discovered that many of my mom friends went through all sorts of breast feeding journeys that i didn't know about. Now that I was a card-carrying member of the mom-club, I was learning more and more about what they went through in silence, or at least without my knowledge.

The best advice I can offer new moms is to seek support. Talk about your feelings. See a professional who will help you. I felt alone until I reached out. The hormones in your new body will attack you and tell you bad things. I cried every day for three weeks. But try to relax. You will choose what is best for you and the baby. You may choose to give up and only formula feed, and you should never try to rationalize or defend our decision. I found myself telling strangers or acquaintances that I COULDN'T get enough milk for my daughter. I shouldn't have said anything at all because it was no ones business but my own self-shame made me try to explain my situation so I wasn't looked upon in a bad light for giving my infant anything other than breast milk. Don't feel ashamed for whatever you decide - own it. This isn't what I would have chosen, but it is what happened. I've embraced our new path and my daughter Isla is beautiful and healthy and happy and growing. Being her mom is the best thing in the world. I've never been happier. And the trials and tribulations are all just stepping stones in the grand scheme of the long and amazing life we will have together, and I plan to tell her when she is older that I made the decision to be the best mom I could be.

1st time mom review series // a list of reviews so far

Last Friday wrapped my last regular, weekly "1st Time Mom Review Series". I am going to continue writing review posts but not on a regular basis.

There are still a ton of topics that I would like to tackle but I need a bit more time to do some research and pull my thoughts together.

Here is a list of links to all past 1st Time Mom Reviews:
Two of the topics I wanted to tackle when I first started this series were "How to Make Your Way Through the Maternity Leave System in Canada" and "Cloth Diapers" but I have since learned that (unfortunately) the Service Canada system (although I am extremely grateful for my maternity leave) is difficult and different for everyone, and I haven't started using the cloth diapers (Happy Heiny) that we were given as of yet. And I am not 100% sure if I am going to. But if you have any questions about either of those topics, just leave me a comment and we can discuss.

Also, if you have any suggestions for future reviews, please leave me a comment and I would love to chat with you about your thoughts.

Thanks for following 1st Time Moms (and Dads)!

1st time mom review series // keeping a 4/5 month old entertained

Below is a list of products that my daughter has loved, and played with, every day between 4 months and 5 months.

We put her through a little circuit throughout the day - it's like she has a baby membership to Curves! :) This is what works for us and our daughter. Not everyone agrees that bouncers and jumpers are good for a baby's development so just choose what works for you an your baby, and what you feel comfortable with.
This is such a fun time for your little one - they can hold things, entertain themselves for short periods of time and interact with you. A few fun things that keep them from getting bored helps you both enjoy the day that much more!

  1. Baby Einstein Musical Motion Activity Jumper
Our baby LOVES her Baby Einstein jumper. It took until about 4.5 months for our daughter to be able to touch the floor on the lowest level but now that she can, there is no stopping her. With 12 activities to keep your little one busy, there is never a dull moment. We have also used link rings to attach a bunch of toys as well so she is never bored. My friend calls any exersaucer type toy as a "circle of neglect" - ha ha - but everything in moderation is my mommy mantra.
  2. Jolly Jumper on a Stand
Once our daughter hit 4 months, she was a bouncing machine and the Jolly Jumper quickly became her favourite activity. We also have the Jolly Jumper Musical Mat so she giggles every time she makes the musical sounds go off. This is a huge hit in our house but we do limit it to only a few times a day, and a few minutes at a time.
  3. Nuby Teethers
We were given a handful of different types of Nuby Teethers before our daughter was born and they were the first "toys" I introduced to our daughter when she started to be able to hold on to objects. There are so many designs and options, your little one will be sure to find a fun new friend to chew and drool on for sure!
  4. Sassy Crib and Floor Mirror
We did have a play mat but after we had to take our daughter to physiotherapy due to a flat spot on the back of her head, I passed the play mat on and opted for a few items that would help encourage tummy time. A case worker suggested a mirror so that she could distract herself with her own expression so I opted for this mirror and it worked. Baby girl started enjoying tummy time so much more. Another great tip to encourage tummy time is to roll up a receiving blanket and place it under the baby's armpits. Takes a bit of pressure off of them and made a big difference for us.
  5. My Friend Emily by Lamaze
When we started making frequent trips to Toys R Us after our baby was born to pick up odds and ends that we didn't even know we needed, I quickly became obsessed with Lamaze toys. They are all adorable and have different textures, make different sounds, tags, etc. to help distract and keep baby interested. A good friend gave Charlotte My Friend Emily for Christmas and we also have Freddie the Firefly.
  6. Oball
When we found I was pregnant, my husband made me go out and buy an Oball for our unborn child. He was obsessed and I couldn't figure it out but I got one, and we were also given one as a gift. If you don't have one, go get one - or a few (I keep one in our diaper bag). They are awesome - easy for babies to hold on to and they come in a ton of different colours, shapes and sizes. I still can't really explain it but I totally get why my husband wanted one - they are awesome and our daughter loves them.
  7. Sophie the Giraffe
Sophie is basically a $20.00 (on average) dog toy for babies - ha ha. Even so, it is so worth the money. Once a baby starts to teethe (or figure out they have a mouth - whatever comes first), EVERYTHING goes into their mouth. Sophie is soft and chewy, and squeaks when squeezed (seriously - just like a dog toy) and the head, long neck and legs are perfect for their little fingers to hold, and to fit into their little mouths.
P.S. I couldn't find the Nuby Teether online that my daughter loves to the most - must be an older product - but here is a picture with her Bunny Nuby and her first time feeling snow. She's a fan of both the bunny and the snow I think!

1st time mom review series // infant seat

When I was expecting our first daughter last October, one of the first items on my registry was for a Bumbo. You know the one - the plastic molded seat that is forever causing controversy because some silly (a.k.a. stupid) parent left their infant seated in one, unattended, on a countertop. And these ridiculous situations cause product recalls and mass hysteria - and a restraint belts?!

Yep - I wanted one because they are the talk of the town and every new parent needed one right? We were given a used blue Bumbo (before we knew we were having a girl but blue is the new pink so that was cool). And of course we needed a $15.00 tray because ... we just did. So off to Toys R Us I trucked with a 2 week old in tow to buy a plastic tray - not really understanding that she wouldn't/shouldn't actually sit in the Bumbo until about 4 months old and even then, the window of using the product properly lasts about - oh - 2 weeks.

And because we are rockstar new parents and do everything we are supposed to (NOT!), here is a photo of our 2 week old baby sitting in her blue Bumbo with her neck compressed because she is way too small and too young, without the restraint belt (never got around to following up on that recall) and propped on the kitchen counter unattended. I'm joking of course - we were right there and would never leave here there. But please note that her terrible baby acne went away soon after this photo was taken and daddy dressed her that day.

We started using the Bumbo really early so that she could have somewhere to rest while we had dinner. The only issue is that she wasn't stable enough to sit properly and, from day one, her little legs were so fat (chunky monkey) that I couldn't get her out of the seat without lifting her and prying the seat off of her. But we used it because we had it and - well - that's what new parents do.

Enter my husband's awesome aunt who lives in Chicago. She wanted to send us a gift to welcome our new bundle of joy into the world but it took longer than she had hoped so we didn't get her gift until our daughter was a little over a month old. The mail lady dropped it off on our front step and when I opened it, I was pleasantly surprised. It was both practical and exactly what we needed - somewhere for our daughter to sit and be entertained while we ate dinner.

The 3-Stage SuperSeat® offers 360 degrees of floor time activity fun & booster in one.  It is a secure and comfortable area for your growing infant to learn to sit up and interact with their environment around them. With the Summer Infant 3-Stage SuperSeat® your baby can experience play while also sitting up. It’s the ideal place to keep baby entertained, safe and happy!

This SuperSeat is - well - super! We still couldn't "properly" use this seat until she was almost 4 months old but it has a tray that swivels around will help when she is eating finger foods but also has toys to entertain her now and ... a built in restraint belt! :) We can use it with or without the activity tray and take it with us as a booster seat when she gets a bit older. It's fun and the openings in the foam, molded seat are much larger than a Bumbo so she doesn't get stuck, just sits comfortable in the grooves.

This post is not to knock Bumbo at all. As a new parent, whatever works, just go with it. But if you are anything like us, and produced an adorable Buddha baby with chubby little limbs, I would suggest to bypass the Bumbo and look for a Summer Infant SuperSeat.

And just to prove that we are awesome parents, here is a photo of our daughter sitting in her SuperSeat, having dinner with us, on the kitchen table (don't mind the permanent marker beauty mark on her forehead - my husband thinks he is funny). Be safe parents!

1st time mom review series // beco gemini baby carrier

Before we had our baby 5 months ago, I was given two hand-me-down Snugli baby carriers. I was super grateful for everything I was given before and after baby Charlotte was born but when I got "big ticket" items like baby furniture, high chairs, baby carriers, etc. I felt like I had hit the jacket - baby stuff is expensive!

After a bit of research, I found out that both carriers were really old. I wasn't super concerned but passed on the older one and kept the newer one (new being 2007). I used it a few times (literally) when Charlotte was a few months old. I would just walk around the house with her and see if either of us really enjoyed the whole baby carrying business. At that point, we could both either take it or leave it from what I could tell.

Fast forward a bit and at her first immunization appointment we got referred to a local development program and physiotherapy program for her flat head (yes - there is some proper medical term for it but I can't remember and no - there is absolutely nothing to worry about). Long story short, the goal is to keep her from lying on her back as much as possible - more tummy time, let her sleep on her stomach if she wants to, use the car seat as little as possible and carry her more.

Yay! Girlfriend finally enjoys herself some tummy time!

So, knowing at that point that if I needed to use a carrier often, the Snugli wasn't going to work for me, I went on the search for the best baby carrier for us and narrowed it down to two popular choices: Ergobaby and the Beco Gemini. After a lot of internet surfing, I decided to get a Beco Gemini.

Without going through a detailed comparison of the two carriers, I just wanted to share with you why the Gemini was the right choices for us. (Here is a great Baby Carrier Comparison Chart but if you Google it, you can find tons online.)

Why did I choose the Beco Gemini carrier?
  • Wearing Options: Our daughter is now 5 months old and super curious about the world around here. I have been told on more than one occasion that she is a "thinker" because she is constantly examining things, staring at stuff and no longer is content to sleep in the vehicle - basically, she gets bored super easy. So, putting all the "research" and "evidence" that says that this option is bad for baby, I really wanted a carrier that would allow me to face our daughter out so she could look around. The Gemini gives you four different wearing options: Front Facing In, Front Facing Out, Hip and Backpack. I don't want this to be a debate about dangling leg and crotch issues - my belief is that everything in moderation is a-ok with me. And don't even get me started about the media around Ergobaby because they are coming out with a carrier that allows you to face your baby out so it can't be all that bad now can it?!
  • Weight Capacity: The Gemini is good for babies from 7 to 35 pounds which means you can use it basically from birth until 35 pounds without an insert (this was important to me because I have heard that the Ergobaby infant insert is cumbersome). We didn't get this carrier until our daughter was about 13 pounds but I like the option for any future children. I know that other carriers allow you to carry your child longer but unless I become a world traveller or go on long hikes, I am not sure why I would need to carry around my 3 or 4 year old. Just me, just saying.
  • Shoulder Straps: The shoulder straps on the Gemini can be worn - easily - crossed for extra back support. This is a huge plus for me because being a 35-year-old first time mom, I am not getting any younger and my body is not getting any stronger anytime soon.
  • Head Support: It has a built-in foldable padded headrest which I like better than the hood that can be found on other carriers. If our daughter falls asleep, I can snap the headrest up and shield her from any distractions without putting anything over her head which she cannot stand. Some would argue that the hood helps block out the sun but if it's that sunny, your kid should have a hat on. Makes sense doesn't it?
  • Design Choices: The Gemini comes in 12 fabulous colour/design options (if you purchase straight from their website and get a current model). Yes, I was swayed by the pretty designs but opted for just a plain grey carrier (see below).
Where did I buy our carrier?
I purchased my Beco Gemini Carrier online from Frogmama. I live in Canada but got it shipped to a place in Blaine, Washington where I pick up packages. Frogmama provided excellent customer service, and free and fast shipping. No complaints!

Did I buy any accessories for our carrier?
No matter what carrier you invest in, I highly suggest buying some teething pads (those little monkeys sure do like to put EVERYTHING in their mouths and don't get me started about the drool). Frogmama's site was excellent and when I put the carrier into my online shopping basket, they prompted me to buy the Beco Drool Pads. Easy and simple.

If I had known what I was looking for, I probably would have gone straight to Etsy to purchase a Drool Pad and Teething Bib set. For now I just tuck in a receiving blanket or towel in the front to help with the drool.

Why did I buy a plain grey carrier when Beco provides such fun colour options?
We purchased a grey carrier for no other reason than my husband suggested it. I didn't want black because I DETEST seeing lint and would have had to velcro a lint roller to the carrier at all times. But when the carrier came and we tested it, in 2.2 seconds it was covered in drool. Oh well - I don't think that can be avoided in this stage of the game and when she is a bit older, that will stop. Not to worry - the carrier is completely machine washable. And no, this is not my husband, just an adorable daddy on the Beco website. Come to think of it, I think this is the only dad model (other than the handsome soldier - and yes, for those of you who know me, I so wanted to by the camo carrier) on the website so this might be why my husband chose grey!
There you have it - the reasons why we chose to purchase our Beco Gemini Baby Carrier. BIG emphasis on why WE did - no baby, mom, dad or family are alike so what works for us might not work for you but hopefully this will give you a bit more food for thought during your carrier research. Happy carrying parents!

1st time mom review series // what is up with children's books?!

It's been a long time since I read a children's book (my favourite growing up were the Berenstain Bears - which I had no clue at the time were faith based - kids don't usually notice the bigger picture) but when my daughter turned 3 months old, I started reading to her. At that point she would sit through a whole book and stare at the pictures so I thought it was as good a time as any to start.

We were lucky and were given a good selection of children's books when she was born so I just started reading them one by one, in no particular order, to see what ones she was attracted to, and which ones mommy might be able to stand reading more than once.

I quickly realized that - for the first time reading a children's book as an adult - children's books, for the most part, are quite messed up and ridiculous!

I could not stop laughing when I read this article from the blog, Anarchy in the Sandbox: 6 Classic Children’s Stories that are Really Screwed Up if You Think about It.

One of my other favourite books growing up was The Giving Tree (I even purchased a copy and used it as our guest book at our wedding) so Maria's take on the classic had me wiping away tears (of hilarity, not sadness):

Seriously, what is it with children’s books and poor boundaries? What the hell are we teaching kids? The story starts out innocently enough: The tree allows the boy to climb her trunk, swing from her branches and rest in her shade. It’s sweet. However, as the boy grows, she becomes a needy, clingy thing that will give up literally anything to please him. He takes her apples to sell, he cuts off her branches to build a house, and he cuts down her whole trunk to make a boat. A fucking boat! How much more self-entitled can you get? When all is said and done, he sits on what’s left of her corpse — a stump — to rest (AGAIN to meet his own needs). And all this makes the tree HAPPY! Is this what love is? Giving your very life so that people can have unnecessary shit like boats?

The most absurd one I have come across is by Robert Munsch. I understand that Robert Munsch is basically a legend in the children's literary world but can we just take a second to discuss Murmel Murmel Murmel (which is only $1.99 on Amazon.ca - just FYI)? So a young girl finds a baby and then does everything in her power to give that baby away and in the end gives it to a truck driver? Um - stranger danger much?

Thank goodness kids (I am generalizing here because this is the case when it comes to me so I assume it is with others as well) won't understand the meaning of these books until they are adults - and the vicious cycle will live one - but seriously ... what the heck?

P.S. I just finished reading Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids and I would love any recommendations similar to this book if you have them! I know we need to read all types of books to our kids but I am hoping to add a few gems like this to her library so that I keep sane while reading to her for years to come!
P.P.S. These aren't real (I hope!!?) but had to share. Check these children's book options out!

1st time mom review series // weespring - a one-stop shop for baby product reviews

I stumbled across weeSpring after I had my first baby last October. I really wish I had discovered the site before she was born.

What is weeSpring?

weeSpring is a platform that helps you share advice with your friends about baby essentials, like bottles, strollers, and diapers. You can compare products within a single category, like high chairs, or browse a trusted friend's favorites.       Expecting parents use weeSpring to ask their friends about the things they couldn't live without, and find out what they wish they'd never bought. New parents use weeSpring to pass along their own tried-and-true advice, while continuing to learn from their friends.

I just signed up for weeSpring myself and got a nice welcome email and this Graco car seat recall email as well:
Tonight, we sent an email out to all weeSpring users who have rated a Graco car seat, because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall of 3.8 million child seats -- and they’re currently disputing whether there should be a mandatory recall of Graco’s infant seats as well.
It's a bigger deal than the usual recall announcement, because it’s the largest in five years. So while we don't usually email en masse about recalls, we decided this was worth sharing with the broader weeSpring community, because there's a pretty good chance that you or someone you know is using a Graco car seat.
Going forward, we'll continue to email alerts out whenever a product you've rated has been recalled*... so take 15 minutes tonight or tomorrow to update your weeSpring profile with the products you're using. (So far in 2014, we've let more than 500 users know about recalls of products they have.)
Just another good reason to be on weeSpring.

I'm really impressed with their site, customer service and care so far - I will definitely be using weeSpring to manage any future product purchases for my daughter, and to keep track of "maybe baby #2" products too!

Do you have any online tools that you would recommend to help out new parents?

* I am in no way affiliated with weeSpring (they have no clue I even exist in this world). I just thought it was a really great idea for new parents and wanted to share!

1st time mom review series // wish list items for "maybe baby" #2

am so not ready for another baby. Not in the least. I am still recovering (mentally and spiritually) from pregnancy, labour and delivery and the first 3 months of baby Charlotte's life. :) All joking aside - I have no clue if we are going to have another baby. I can't imagine only having one, or Charlotte not knowing what it is like to have a little brother or sister. I have always thought that if I did have kids, I would have at least 2. My husband is set on just having one - mainly for financial reasons - but we will have to see what the future holds I guess. I must say, I would love another maternity leave. This is the best time in my life so far - enjoying every minute of it and am so grateful.
But if we do decide to have another baby, and are blessed to have one, these are on my wish list of items I would love to try!

Fisher-Price Newborn Rock n' Play Sleeper
I think there was a just a recall on this item for mold but those recalls don't ever deter me (just be sure to Google it if you already own this product). We used a basinet for our little one but she never really got used to it so I moved her into a little bed next to me and that only worked sometimes. She spent her first 2 months sleeping on me or swaddled and propped up in a breastfeeding pillow. For Maybe Baby #2, I would like to try a different approach and get something like this Rock n' Play Sleeper. And if it works, it is easy to move from room to room, and easy to travel with. Anyone use this product and did your little one sleep in it?

When we went for our hospital tour, the lead nurse told us that swaddling was a big no no now and that our newborn would not be swaddled in hospital. Fast forward to d-day, and the first thing they did was wrap her up like a tight little burrito. I had some judgement about swaddling so I never learned how to do it properly with a blanket. We used a few swaddle sacks from about 1 to 2 months but my husband hated them. I've heard rave reviews that the Miracle Blanket from other moms who swear that it's a sleep genie. Will definitely invest in one if the time comes.

This is the "it" product for 2014. Charlotte never took to her swing or vibrating seat but if we have baby number 2, I would love to try a MamaRoo - swinging and vibrating all in one. I enter every contest I come across to try and win one of these. And since the majority of our baby gear is second hand (grateful) it would be fun to have something brand new the next time around.

Speaking of sleep ... the Magic Sleepsuit is supposed to work miracles when transitioning out of swaddling. Good until babies can roll over on their own, this Sleepsuit keeps the baby weighted on their back so they start to feel freedom but not too much - less arm and leg craziness. Charlotte had no problem going from the swaddle sack to a sleep sack and onesie but not all babies enjoy hat much freedom until they are a bit older.

I had to buy my friend a baby shower gift so I asked my prenatal class momma friends what baby product they can't live without (I actually don't use a lot of products - we have a ton of stuff but I rarely use most of it). One friend said that she loves her Woombie Donut and after looking into it, I wish I had one myself. It's basically a travel bed for your infant. You can use it to set your baby down in a comfortable space when you need your hands free. They say not to use it to sleep in but I would have no problem with it - and would probably take it everywhere with me. I will for sure be looking at one of these in the future.
Are there any items that you think are must haves for "maybe baby" #2?

1st time mom review series // my favourite gifts for a new mom

When you have a baby (especially your first) you get a lot of gifts. And 99.9% of those gifts are for the baby. As a 1st Time Mom, it's fun to open up and explore the tiny outfits, the new toys and all the thoughtful presents your little one gets from friends and family but what about mom? She did just go through a marathon to get that little bundle of joy here so why not spoil her too? For sure bring the new babe a little something, but don't forget about momma bear as well. Doesn't have to be right away, it can even be a few months down the road. Trust me, the thought will be more than appreciated. Here are a few items that have helped me through my 4 brief months of motherhood.

crockpot and recipe book
I use my crockpot on a weekly basis - sometimes daily. You literally set it, and forget it. Check to see if your new momma friend has a crockpot and gift her a new recipe book to help her stay (easily) motivated in the kitchen.

essential oils
I have never been more hungry and thirsty in my life than when I started breastfeeding. A good water bottle and lots of delicious snacks would be a welcome for any new mom trying to figure it all out.

water and snacks
This Stress Relief Aromatherapy Inhaler has been amazing to help battle my anxiety during the first few months of motherhood. I love all that Escents have to offer so any of their products would be a treat for a new momma.

lip balm
Want something quick and easy to bring to your new mom friend? You cannot have enough lip balm around the house when you start breastfeeding. Those little cuties suck you dry - literally! :) Eos is my new favourite!

1st time mom review series // video baby monitor

When we found out I was pregnant, one of the most important baby items for my husband was the monitor. I too was of the believe that we had to have one but he was adamant about having a video monitor system. We have friends who witnessed their little guy having a seizure on their video monitor. Ever since then, my husband needed a video monitor and his mom offered to buy us one so I was off doing more research.

After a ton of searching and reading, I finally decided on the Summer Infant Baby Touch Digital Color Video Monitor and ordered it from Amazon.com. I decided to get the first generation because I had read that it got better reception than the most recent version. That being said, I also read a ton of reviews that raved about the product but also said that it had issues with connecting. I decided to order it based on the positive reviews and we would just see how it goes. P.S. I looked for the best price and found it was the cheapest on Amazon.com by far.

We didn't need to use the monitor for the first couple of months because Charlotte slept in our room and napped wherever I was. But once we moved her into her own room and she started napping in her crib, we started using the monitor. It is super easy to install and use, and the monitor is really clear. We used it for about a week and then ... we could not get a connection signal. It was "Out of Range" for a few days straight no matter what I did.

I went on to Summer Infant's Facebook Page and read a lot of angry posts about how Summer Infant wasn't helping customers with their product problems. The thing is, these people were over their 1 Year Warranty, so I am not sure what they expected from the company?! I posted that I needed help and called their customer support line. Within a few minutes, I had a waybill emailed to me and I was asked to send back the monitor, camera and all chords and in 7 to 10 days, I would have a new unit. I was a bit hesitant because I didn't want to go a week without the monitor (I had gotten used to being lazy - ha ha) so I waited a few days and tried troubleshooting some more. Nothing worked so I sent it back via UPS and within a week, a new unit was on my doorstep.

When I opened it, I was kind of surprised that I got Baby Touch 2 Digital Color Video Monitor but there isn't a ton of difference between the two versions - it was just as easy to install and use.
Fast forward about a month and I have no problems with this monitor - it works perfectly. Sometimes when I press the button to view the image, Charlotte is missing (it freaks me out a bit every single time) or there is a coloured bar but pressing the button again sets everything back properly. I don't have any issue with this because I am sure this would happen with any video monitor.

So now I know that an expensive baby monitor is not a need, more of a want. I could totally live without one but it does give some peace of mind, and I am sure it will come in handy when the weather is a bit better and I do more outside while she is napping.

I would definitely recommend any Summer Infant products - their customer service was awesome and if a product stops working after a year of working totally fine, I am okay with that. A warranty is limited on all products and nothing lasts forever. Also - these monitors have a 2-way talking feature which is awesome because you can talk to your baby and - if you have any sense of humour - scare the crap out of them from time to time to keep mommy and daddy entertained. Just saying! :)
